Smart lenses are permanent intraocular lenses that allow vision at both near and far distances without glasses. They provide clear near and far vision without glasses for patients over the age of 40 who experience near and far vision impairments, cataracts, and those with severe vision impairments that cannot be corrected with laser treatment.
Different types of smart lenses are available, depending on the patient's eye structure and their needs for computer, driving, phone use, and reading.
Before treatment, a detailed eye examination such as biomicroscopy, OCT, topography, endothelial count, and biometry is performed. The procedure is painless and takes approximately 7-8 minutes under local anesthesia. There are no insertion, removal, or cleaning of smart lenses. These lenses become part of the body and remain fixed in place.
There are no restrictions on daily life after treatment; the patient can continue their normal life. Smart lenses are a lifelong treatment. Other eye problems are the same as those experienced with normal vision.
Once fitted, smart lenses become a part of the body. There is no wear and tear, no insertion, no removal, no maintenance, and no replacement.
Can smart lenses be tinted? No. These lenses are clear and unnoticeable. Smart lens surgery involves removing the eye's natural lens and replacing it with an artificial one. Prescriptions remain unchanged, and patients don't need glasses for life.
Smart lens surgery is no different from cataract surgery performed using the Phaco technique. The difference between smart lens surgery and Phaco surgery is the detailed measurements required before the procedure and the lenses used. It also requires precise surgery. While standard lenses can tolerate a certain degree of placement error, smart lenses require precise placement.
Smart lens surgery is performed with eye drop anesthesia. In experienced hands, the procedure takes about 7-8 minutes. It is painless. The patient can go home after the surgery, and it is best to keep the eye bandaged until the next morning. The bandage is removed the next morning.
After smart lens surgery:
- Ointment is applied every two hours before going to bed.
- For the first week, avoid bending forward, lying on the operated eye, and avoiding heavy lifting.
- It is important to avoid dusty, dirty environments and maintain good hand hygiene.
- Some blurry vision and stinging sensations may occur in the first few days.
- Recovery of vision may take a week or ten days.
- Adjustment to distance, intermediate, and near vision may take several months. Some patients may experience sensitivity to light at night and halos in the early stages. In the vast majority of patients, this symptom gradually diminishes and subsides to a non-disturbing level after 3-4 months.
